Overview

Morlais Castle Golf Club, located in Merthyr Tydfil, is a popular venue with a rich history dating back to 1270. As part of their commitment to sustainability, Morlais aim to reduce operational costs and carbon emissions. Nuvolt Ltd were chosen as the partner to design, construct, and implement low carbon technology solutions to meet these goals.

Challenge

The primary issue faced surrounded the limited amount of space available for the solar installation of the essential equipment needed for the project. Morlais Castle Golf Club is a key pillar of the community, they have a busy calendar of planned events, such as weddings, corporate and hospitality events, which made it challenging to set up scaffolding for the installation.

Solution

External Inverter

Given the limited space within the main building, Nuvolt strategically chose to place the SolarEdge inverter externally. This decision allowed for optimal use of available space while ensuring the inverter could be securely installed outdoors without compromising on efficiency.

EV Charger

To further the club's sustainability goals, Project EV charging stations were installed in the clubs car park. These state-of-the-art charging stations not only facilitate convenient electric vehicle charging, but also contribute significantly to reducing the club's overall carbon footprint

Solar Panels

After a thorough evaluation of various options, DMEGC solar panels were selected for their high efficiency and compatibility with the spatial constraints of the site. These panels offered the best balance between performance and fit, making them the ideal choice for this project.

Implementation

The timeline of the project was carefully aligned with the club's busy events calendar. Scaffolding was strategically constructed and subsequently dismantled in the intervals between scheduled events. This meticulous planning ensured minimal disruption to the club's activities while allowing the project to progress smoothly.

Environmental Impact

The implementation of solar and EV charging stations at Morlais Castle Golf Club resulted in significant environmental advantages:

Trees Saved: The solar panels can generate an annual energy output that equates to saving 160 trees per year - based on an average of 25 kg of CO2 absorption per tree. By reducing the need for conventional energy sources, Morlais will play a significant role in preserving local ecosystems.

Carbon Footprint Reduction: The solar panels contributed to an annual reduction of 4 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions. This reduction is a step toward combatting climate change and promoting sustainability.

"We are incredibly pleased with the sustainable solutions Nuvolt has provided us. Despite the challenges of limited space

and a bustling event calendar, they delivered a system that not only aligns with our sustainability goals but also offers

significant operational and financial benefits. This project sets a new standard for what can be achieved in the leisure industry,

and we're proud to be a part of this journey towards a greener future."

Business Impact

Reduction in energy costs – By partnering with Nuvolt, Morlais Castle Golf Club have been able to install a bespoke system designed and commissioned based on their usage. Solar PV, coupled with an external SolarEdge inverter, have significantly reduced the club's reliance on grid electricity. The solar energy system not only aligns with the club's sustainability goals but also substantially lowers operational costs. The energy generated is sufficient to meet a considerable portion of the club's daily electricity needs and as a result, reducing electricity bills.

Additional revenue stream - To further the club's sustainability efforts and offer added convenience to members and guests, Project EV charging stations were installed. These stations can also serve as an additional revenue stream for the club. Members and guests can charge their electric vehicles for a fee,

making the club a more attractive and eco-friendly venue. The EV charging stations also support the broader community's transition to electric vehicles by contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.

Conclusion

Nuvolt successfully delivered a turnkey solution that not only met but exceeded Morlais Castle Golf Club's sustainability objectives. Despite the challenges posed by space constraints and a busy event schedule, the project was completed on time and within budget, setting a benchmark for sustainability in the leisure industry.
